Auchentoshan: hard to say, easy to drink!
Dates are important at the Auchentoshan distillery. After all, the passage of time marks the maturation of our whisky, as it reaches its peak. To learn a little more about the history of our whisky and where we come from, here are some important milestones on our journey.
The distillery was established in 1823 in the renowned Dumbartonshire estate. In 1878, Auchentoshan was acquired by C.H. Curtis and Co. Ltd., and for the first time in the company's history, production reached approximately 50,000 gallons per year. In 1903, the brewing brothers, distillers, and wine merchants George and John McLachlan took over the management of the distillery.
In 1941, during Nazi bombings, the distillery was severely damaged, and the warehouses were completely destroyed. Whisky production was halted during World War II, as the River Clyde and its ports were a primary target for German soldiers.
In 1969, the Auchentoshan distillery was sold to the hotel chain Eadie Cairns, which began selling its single malt products in its own hotels and restaurants.
In 1984, the distillery was sold to Morison Bowmore, and ten years later, the company was acquired by the Japanese Suntory.
In 2002, Auchentoshan released its Three Wood Single Malt Scotch Whisky, which quickly became iconic and is among the brand's most recognizable labels.
In 2013, Auchentoshan Virgin Oak was launched on the market.
Our trademark is single malt whisky with a clean and complex character. The barley is unadulterated and gently roasted in our Glasgow distillery, which gives Auchentoshan whiskies their distinctive taste. The barley is milled and processed into starch. Then the mixture is heated to a temperature of 63.5 degrees. This process converts the starch into sugar, after which it is left to ferment.
Auchentoshan triple distills every drop of whisky. The entire distillation process raises the alcohol content from the initial 8% in the first phase to around 81%. No other Scottish distillery triple distills its whiskies. After double distillation, whisky typically reaches about 70% alcohol content. Auchentoshan's history has always been associated with a different distillation method for creating iconic Lowland whisky.
Our oak casks have a huge influence on the taste of whisky. For this reason, the distillery invests a lot of time and money in their selection. If an alcoholic beverage wants to earn the name Single Malt Whisky, it must, by law, age in oak casks for at least three years, and not a day less, but Auchentoshan goes even further. Their whisky is aged in casks that have previously held bourbon, sherry, and even fine wine.
