The history of Matusalem rum begins in the distant year 1872 and has gone through ups and downs. Created by two Spanish brothers, Benjamin and Eduardo Camp, and partner Evaristo Alvarez in Santiago de Cuba, the brand experienced Cuba's golden years and became a symbol of the era. Unfortunately, with the establishment of Castro's dictatorial regime and the nationalization of businesses, the family business was left without a factory, and they even had to smuggle the rum production recipe out of the country. A long period of trials and tribulations followed from 1956 to 1995 – the death of leading family members, a struggle with the board of directors to preserve and buy back the company, and legal disputes to protect the brand and its origin. In 2015, a new production and bottling plant was opened in the Dominican Republic, as the microclimate is quite similar to that of Santiago de Cuba. Matusalem regained its reputation as a high-quality rum and an innovator in production and flavors. The latest offering is Insolito rum, a blend of Gran Reserva 15y.o. and rum aged in Tempranillo wine barrels.
