The story of Milagro Tequila began in 1998 with two college friends, Danny Schneeweiss and Moy Guindi. Danny and Moy saw amazing things in Mexico City. Everywhere around them, they saw international sophistication, youthful energy, and passionate creativity. Everywhere, except for tequila. Tequilas had become one-dimensional caricatures of tradition or calculated celebrity-driven business ventures, devoid of creativity and truth. Danny and Moy wanted a tequila that would connect two worlds – the deeply rooted integrity of traditional tequila and the vibrant, creative culture of modern Mexico City.
For Pedro, our Master Distiller, creating a modern tequila didn't mean abandoning tradition, but embracing it fully – starting with the agave itself. He insisted on using 100% blue agave, harvested only in the Jalisco Highlands, where the finest and sweetest blue agave in the world is grown. To extract all the nuances of this precious agave flavor, Pedro uses centuries-old preparation methods. He uses traditional brick ovens to slow-roast his agave piñas for 36 hours. This is the way to extract the best flavor from the ingredients. Once the piñas are slow-roasted, they are shredded and pressed to extract the sweet agave juice. This juice is then placed in stainless steel tanks, where the sugar is converted into alcohol. Half science, half art, the fermentation process is closely monitored by our tequila artist Pedro.
Most tequilas are distilled using one type of still – for Milagro, Pedro uses two completely different types of stills. First, in a pot still, which preserves the appetizing flavor of the agave. Then, a column still gives smoothness and finish to the drink, comparable to the best white spirits in the world. This new way of producing tequila, which Pedro had been testing and perfecting in his head for years. When Danny and Moy tasted it, they enthusiastically declared "¡Es un Milagro!" (It's a miracle!)
Tequila only gets better with time. All tequilas from the Reposado and Añejo series are aged. And unlike most tequila producers who do not age their silver tequilas, Milagro also ages its Select Barrel Reserve Silver series. Every element of Milagro proudly reflects Danny and Moy's vision for a tequila that embodies the creativity and self-expression of modern Mexico. Our Select Barrel series bottles are handcrafted to resemble the agave plant. The company continues to collaborate with artists from Mexico City to create graffiti and other marketing communications for their tequila.
