Chateau Burgozone
To the north, where grapes have been cultivated on the slopes of the Danube River since the time of the Thracians, lies Chateau Burgozone – a winery shaped like a fortress and bearing the name of a Roman fort. We are a boutique family winery, perched on the bank of the great Danube, amidst vineyards stretching to the horizon. As independent vine growers and winemakers, we aspire to present modern and elegant Bulgarian wines.
Chateau Burgozone is a family boutique winery located in Northwest Bulgaria. The winery is situated near the town of Oryahovo, on the bank of the Danube River, overlooking Esperanto Island. The winery gets its name from the Roman fortress Burgozone, built on the ancient Roman road Via Istrum. Over the centuries, the region has been renowned as one of Bulgaria's main wine-producing areas.
The selection of a site for establishing the vineyard began in 2000. A unique 100-hectare terroir with proven potential for growing high-quality grapes was chosen.
All Chateau Burgozone wines are produced from our own grapes, which are hand-picked and sorted. As a result of "canopy management" and "green harvests," reflecting intensive manual operations in the vineyard, yields are limited, and the grapes are of the highest quality.
In winemaking, we adhere to a minimalist intervention in vinification, paying exceptional attention to varietal characteristics. The Burgozone style is the fruit of a unique terroir, influenced by the Danube River and the know-how of two renowned Bulgarian oenologists, and can be described as FFF – Fresh, Fruity, and Fine.
Every glass of "Burgozone" wine takes you on a journey along the Danube River.
Grapes
All our wines are produced from hand-picked and sorted grapes and are bottled on site to highlight the unique terroir. We carefully apply canopy management and green pruning techniques to limit yields from 45 to 20 hl/hectare. We practice sustainable viticulture, which along with environmental responsibility are among our priorities.
Terroir
Burgozone's 100-hectare vineyard is located at 43° north latitude, on slopes from 140 to 180 m above sea level, and consists of high-quality clones of elite varieties planted on deep loess soil. The vineyard is situated in a zone with a moderate continental climate, featuring hot days and cool nights, influenced by the Danube River.
Vineyards
Our vineyards number 11 international grape varieties (Chardonnay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Cabernet Franc, Marselan, Syrah, Egiodola, Merlot) and 2 local varieties – Gamza (red) and Tamyanka (white). To ensure the complexity of our wines, we rely on clonal diversity (over 30 different clones). The average age of the vines is 10 years.
