Chateau Kolarovo

Chateau Kolarovo

Wine is the keyhole through which you peek into the heart.

The winery's wines are distinguished by their full body and high alcohol content due to the excellent ripening of the grapes. The aromas are typical for each variety: plum, mint, forest fruits, and light jammy notes. Their contact with oak barrels softens them and imparts spiciness and toasted tones. Annually, 'Chateau Kolarovo' produces around 70,000 bottles, distributed in short boutique series. The wines are always powerful, with a soft southern character, ripe fruit, and smoky notes.

The winery's team strives for their wines to become an emblem of the Kolarovo region and Southern Sakar. The enologists from Kolarovo do not compromise on quality at any step of the production process: from the grapes in the vineyard to the wine in the bottle. These efforts towards individuality and consistency in wine quality have been rewarded with dozens of medals from Decanter, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, International Wine Contest Bucharest, Mondiales des Vins – Canada, Berliner Wine Trophy, and Citadelles Du Vin.

Chateau Kolarovo is perhaps the only winery of its size in Bulgaria that has won so many international awards from prestigious competitions for its wines.

Vineyards

The winery owns 150 decares of well-maintained vineyards, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, as well as newly planted 150 decares of vineyards, which now include new varieties such as Chardonnay, Tamyanka, Viognier, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Mavrud. The winery also owns 50 decares of 40-year-old Merlot vineyards, which are part of the famous Kolarovo massifs – one of the largest, oldest, and most extensive vineyard areas in Bulgaria and the Balkan Peninsula.

Terroir

"Château Kolarovo" is located on the southwestern slopes of Sakar Mountain – the lowest mountain in Bulgaria. The soils in the region are brown to brown forest, with low to medium rock content. The reproductive layer of the soils is very deep and has a high nitrogen content – warm, moisture-retaining, and very well aerated. These prerequisites, as well as the fact that there are no pollutants in the area, create excellent conditions for growing high-quality white and red grape varieties and a harmony of aromas and delicate flavors, with a distinctive and explosive body, embodying the expressive nature of the south.

Climate

The climate in the region is continental-Mediterranean. Winters are mild – absolute temperatures do not fall below 0-5 °C. Spring is warm, arrives early, and is followed by a hot and dry summer. The total degree-days for the growing season are relatively high – 4000 – 4200 °C. The frequency of spring rainfall is on average 5%. Average daily temperatures for the hottest months are 24-26 °C, and the average minimum temperature for the year does not fall below 16-18 °C. The average absolute minimum is between 10 and 15 °C, and winter cold snaps usually do not last more than a week.

The winery's wines are sold to private Bulgarian and foreign clients, at wine tours and tastings held at the winery, on the online platform for promoting Bulgarian winemakers Vinorium.bg, and here, in our online store. Exceptions to this are the wine shop and restaurant 'Sakar' in Harmanli (an incredible place run by our colleagues from Villa Bassarea, offering wines from almost all wineries in Southern Sakar), the winery's company store and the 'Wine Gallery' wine shop, both located in Stara Zagora, and the 'Coupage' Bulgarian wine and delicatessen shop in Sofia.
