Zelanos

Wine is the only drink in the modern world whose calling card is the place where the grapes grew.

Zelanos Winery is the realization of a long-cherished dream of its owner, Reni Slavova. The winery is located in the village of Slavyantsi, in the Rose Valley wine region.

Besides being famous worldwide for the highest quality rose oil, this is the realm of Misket: a delicate, aromatic, typical Bulgarian variety, with tasting notes reminiscent of white flowers, green apple, and citrus.

One glance at the label is enough to tell you the name of the vineyard, the village, or at least the country from which the grapes originate. The character of Zelanos wines is encoded in the traceability of this signature. At the heart of it all are the estate's own vineyards. From the local unique Misket variety, Zelanos winery produces classic Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc from 70 hectares of its own vineyards. The carefully selected vineyard sites are at the core of the wine's taste and quality.

Terroir

The terroir of the village of Slavyantsi (the combination of soil and natural conditions that give character to the wine) is well-drained and sandy, which are perfect conditions to impart elegance and mineral finesse to the wines. In addition to Misket, the winery produces the classic Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc from 70 hectares of its own vineyards. The wines are presented in two series – the premium Zelanos series and the super-premium 'Z' series. Annual production is currently around 100,000 bottles. The first vintage was 2014.

Grapes

The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, and then individually hand-sorted, berry by berry, on special sorting tables, as is the practice in elite French châteaux. The winery is equipped with the latest technology, and this, combined with the extensive manual work, makes it modern in the best sense of the word. The wines are exceptionally delicate, elegant, and precisely reflect the character of the place where the grapes were harvested.

Cultivation

We believe that the philosophy of truly good wine is to be natural, to connect you with the culture of the place, and to give you the opportunity to taste the land in a unique way. The secret to truly good wine is a matter of balance. Balance is a natural state that can only be achieved in the vineyard, not in the winery. For our wines to ring true, we minimally intervene in the natural course of nature.

Zelanos, also known as Vinias, is the patron of the first autumn month - September, as well as of merriment and love. His meaning in the language of the Thracians is quite eloquent: "desired." From the name of this god also comes one of the words that the Thracians used for wine: "zelas." Long after the heyday of Thracian civilization, wine remains the incredible living thread that continues to connect us magnetically with our ancient predecessors.
