Katarzyna
Katarzyna Estate is located in the southernmost part of Bulgaria. The region is extremely fertile for growing vineyards. It is situated at the same latitude as some of the most famous wine regions in Europe. The winery is positioned 2 km from the border with Greece, at the foot of the Eastern Rhodopes. The area is hilly, very picturesque, and still wonderfully wild.
The interesting architecture divides the building into three levels, allowing for gravitational transfer of grapes and wine from one level to another. The gravitational principle includes several sorting lines and manual sorting of the grapes before they enter the fermenters, thus ensuring that only the highest quality berries remain for processing.
The winery is equipped with the highest level of technological equipment necessary for modern winemaking and is the largest Bulgarian winery by capacity that uses the micro-vinification method.
Terroir
The winery's terroir is our great advantage. Within the estate, we have many, and most importantly, diverse areas in terms of qualities and characteristics, which allows us to harvest grapes with different parameters and consequently produce wines of different styles. It is precisely the soil and climate that determine the specific taste and ripening of grapes in certain regions, sub-regions, or individual plots. The specifics of the terroir dominate over the characteristics of the grape variety, and this is exactly what differentiates otherwise well-known varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or Chardonnay from each other. The orientation and slope of the vineyard are also important. The Byalata Prast micro-region, where our estate is located, is distinguished by soil characteristics and a climate that acts as a bridge between soil, vineyards, and wine.
Climate and Soils
Katarzyna Estate is located in the region with the most prolonged sunshine, with the sum of temperatures reaching 4000°C during the growing season. The climate is moderately continental, with a strong Mediterranean influence. Characteristic features include warm summers, mild winters, and a relatively small annual temperature amplitude. A unique air corridor formed between the Sakar Mountains and the Eastern Rhodopes also plays an important role in the favorable development of the vineyards in the region. Within the boundaries of our estate, we have identified leached cinnamon forest soils - Chromi-Eutric Cambisols, severely eroded shallow cinnamon forest soils - Eutric Regosols, and luvic cinnamon forest soils - Chromi Luvisols. The altitude varies from 120 to 180 m.
Vineyards
Katarzyna Estate owns 7,500 decares of vineyards located in the area of Byalata Prost, in the land of Belitsa and Lozen villages. Between 2004 and 2007, after careful research of the soils and climatic specifics of the individual plots, the planting of various varieties began, with the main planting taking place in 2006. The ratio between red and white varieties is 70:30. Of the white grape varieties, Chardonnay has the largest share. Other white varieties grown are Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Pinot Gris, Traminer, Viognier, and Muscat. Red varieties include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Malbec, Tempranillo, Carmenere, Rubin, and Mavrud. The most important thing we have established is that with proper and precise work in the vineyard, consistent and predictable results in product quality are obtained.
Some of the most interesting archaeological sites near the winery are the Thracian Beehive Tomb and the well-preserved Medieval Byzantine Fortress. The tomb is located about 10 km from the winery. It dates back to the 4th century BC and is fully preserved in its authentic form. The Medieval fortress is located on the western outskirts of Mezek village and was built at the end of the 11th century, during the time of the Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1117). Near the winery there are also numerous natural attractions offering impressive views.
