Orbelus
The Orbelus vineyards are located in one of the southernmost points of Bulgaria – on the eastern bank of the Struma River, in the lands of the villages of Kromidovo, Kapatovo, Harsovo, and Marikostinovo. Their exposure is eastern, and the altitude ranges from 160 to 250 meters. Besides our wines, the banks of the Struma are also the birthplace of some of the people who created Orbelus. For our family, the region is not only excellent for viticulture and winemaking but also a source of inspiration and pleasure.
The main goal of Orbelus is to produce quality blended wine with a distinct individuality and a sense of origin. According to the winery's philosophy, to achieve this result, the work begins with selecting the most suitable location and grape varieties and cultivating the vineyards. That is why wines named Orbelus are made only from their own organically grown vineyards.
The cultivated varieties are selected in accordance with the climatic conditions and soil content. The varieties include: Broadleaf Melnik, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Grenache Noir, Primitivo, Petit Verdot, Marselan, Mourvèdre, Viognier, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris.
The project began in 2000 when the first 72 decares of land were purchased in the area of Kapatovo village, along the Struma River valley, at the foot of Pirin mountain. By 2010,
the company acquired over 200 decares, divided into 20 independent mini-blocks in the lands of the villages of Kromidovo, Kapatovo, Marikostinovo, and Harsovo. All of them have specific characteristics of soil, humidity, air, wind, and other elements of the terroir.
Vineyards
All Orbelus vineyards are certified under Bulgarian and European legislation for organic grape production. Special attention is paid to cultivating the region's traditional Early Melnik Vine variety, which is also present in all Orbelus red wines.
Terroir
The location of the vineyards was chosen considering the suitable conditions of the micro-region. The region is hilly, characterized by a variety of soils – from cinnamon-forest, through sandy-loamy to slightly and moderately stony, and the vineyards are located at an altitude of 160-250 m above sea level.
Climate
The region is caressed by the Mediterranean breeze and surrounded by seven mountains: Pirin, Slavyanka, Sengelska Planina, Belasitsa, Ograzhden, Malashevska Planina, and Rupite (Kozhuh). This specific climate, combined with the clayey and sandy soils, is among the leading factors responsible for the rich, southern taste of our wines.
