Medi Valley

Medi Valley

Wine is not a work of art, nor is it a mere product. It is a mystery and a magic, it is the sun's energy transformed into unique colors, aromas, and flavors.

Just an hour away from Sofia, you can discover and visit the modern Medi Valley Winery complex. The winery was chosen as Winery of the Year for 2016. Medi Valley is located in a picturesque area on the road to the Rila Monastery. The southwestern viticultural region, known as the Struma Valley, begins here.

The attractive geographical location of the winery makes it the most charming new destination for wine tourism. Medi Valley wines are among the most awarded at numerous national and international wine forums.

Millennia ago, the lands along the Struma River were inhabited by the Thracian tribe of the Medi. In addition to the legendary Spartacus, the Medi were known for their developed viticulture and winemaking and their cult of wine. In honor of the people who laid the foundations of winemaking in this part of the valley, the winery was named Medi Valley.

Medi Valley is a classic winery complex, built in 2007. It is located in the village of Smochevo, at the foothills of southwestern Rila, at an altitude of 630 m, in the northernmost part of the Struma River valley, on the scenic road to the Rila Monastery. It consists of a modern winery and 370 decares of vineyards, planted with Chardonnay, Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc, two clones of Merlot and two clones of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vineyards

The vineyards face southwest, situated on alluvial-meadow and cinnamon forest soils, which are well-drained, slightly acidic, with suitable clay and iron content. Interestingly, they contain small carbonate fragments that act as a natural drainage and contribute to the mineral notes in the white wines. The vine training systems are single Guyot, double Guyot, and double low-stem Guyot, with 400 vines planted per decare. It consists of 370 decares of vineyards, planted with Chardonnay, Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc, two clones of Merlot, and two clones of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Terroir

The unique terroir for viticulture favors the cultivation of both white and red varieties, which, with planned, timely and appropriate agrotechnical measures and reduced yields, in compliance with the technological requirements of the winemakers, produce grapes from which impressive high-quality wines can be made. The soil is humic-carbonate, formed on limestone bedrock. It is mixed with sand and clay, and countless shells of ancient origin mussels and crustaceans make it unique. The varieties are Chardonnay, Viognier, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Rondo.

Climate

The climate is temperate continental with the influence of the Danube River. The vineyard is located at an altitude of 125 m on a terrain with a pronounced unevenness. It is characterized by mild winters and relatively dry summers. The average sunshine duration is 2900 hours, and the average annual rainfall is 588 mm.

In 2010, Medi Valley began implementing a new winery concept, aiming to transform it into the pearl of Bulgaria's southwest. The creation of interesting, rich, specific terroir wines with their own style and unique character began, made from grapes specially selected for each varietal and wine type at optimal ripeness. Medi Valley's wines are divided by varietal and style into different price and quality categories. The brands under which they are produced and sold include the basic series – A Good Year, the mid-range series eXcentric Incanto, and the premium brand Incanto.
