Description

Nikolaihof Wachau in Mautern has a history dating back around two thousand years. It was once a Celtic cult site, part of a Roman fortress, and a bishopric and administrative seat. The winery is the oldest in Austria. The Saahs family has owned Nikolaihof for 125 years and was an absolute pioneer in biodynamic farming in 1971. Riesling and Grüner Veltliner are primarily cultivated on 22 hectares according to Demeter's strict biodynamic guidelines. The wines ferment on their own yeasts and are stored in large, old oak barrels in the historic Roman wine cellar for up to 20 years.

Grüner Veltliner Federspiel (formerly Federspiel Im Weingebirge) comes from Weingebirge. This is one of the oldest vineyard names in Europe, first mentioned in 511. The soils there are characterized by clay, loess, and paragneiss. The wine matured for half a year in large wooden barrels and was bottled in April 20214.
