The history of Tenuta Il Poggione began at the end of the 19th century with Lavinio Franceschi, a landowner from Scandicci in the surroundings of Florence, who fell in love with Montalcino and the picturesque hills in the area. As early as the 1800s, the Franceschi family discovered the potential of Sangiovese grapes grown in the region and managed to distinguish the best vineyards where they should be planted. At that time, they selected Sangiovese clones better adapted to the production of high-quality grapes and first-class wines. Today, the winery is managed by Leopoldo Franceschi and his wife Livia.
Tenuta Il Poggione is one of the largest estates in Montalcino, covering an area of 600 hectares, of which 125 hectares are planted with vines. The new winery, built in 2004, allows for modern winemaking processes, using the most modern technologies and equipment. Sangiovese grapes are carefully selected in the vineyard, with only healthy and the ripest fruits brought to Tenuta's wines each passing year. For aging its red wines, Il Poggione uses large French oak barrels, which are kept five meters underground. Their legendary wine – Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli – is produced only from the best vintages and comes only from the "I Paganelli" vineyard, the oldest vineyard on the estate, planted in 1964.
