Château Calon-Segur 3rd Grand Cru Classé 2012, 0.75
Historical records show that Calon Segur existed as early as 1147, when it was owned by Marquis de Ségur. He was an important figure in Bordeaux's history, not only for his ownership of numerous estates in the region (he also owned Lafite and Latour), but also for the words that gave rise to the idea for Calon Segur's heart-shaped logo. Legend has it that de Ségur said: "I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon." This famous saying remains forever on the label of Chateau Calon Segur, where a drawing of a heart is prominently featured in the logo. The 74-hectare vineyard of Château Calon-Segur, which is partially walled, is located north of Saint-Estèphe. The vines are planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and are situated on gravel layers up to 5 meters deep, mixed with sand, and in places with limestone and clay. The wines ferment for 3 weeks in enamel-lined steel vats and then age in oak barrels (40% new) for 18 months.
