Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2ème Cru Classé 1990, 0.75
The history of the château dates back to the 17th century, when it was part of the much larger Château Beychevelle, which was eventually sold as part of a debt repayment. The estate remained in the family over the years until the 1855 Classification, in which it was classified as a Second Growth. The belt-tightening during the Depression and the Great War led to several sales of Ducru Beaucaillou, until in 1941 it finally fell into the hands of the Borie family in a miserable and dilapidated state. The family made great efforts to renovate and expand the estate, acquiring a significant plot of land from the neighbouring Château Lagrange. Their management was of great benefit to winemaking here, but it was not without its mishaps – in the 1980s, contamination of the cellar rendered some vintages undrinkable and damaged the château's reputation. These problems are now a thing of the past, and today the name Ducru Beaucaillou is synonymous with quality. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is a Saint-Julien estate that is now one of the leading Super Seconds. It is owned by the Borie family and is located in the southeastern part of the Saint-Julien appellation. Ducru-Beaucaillou's 50 hectares of vineyards (65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot) are located on large-stone gravel layers, enriched with alluvial soil deposits and with a high clay content. The wines are aged in oak barrels (50-60% new) for 18 months.
