Chateau Haut-Brion 1st Growth 1996, 0.75
The only property outside the Médoc included in the 1855 Classification, Haut-Brion's viticultural history can be traced back further than that of its Médoc First Growth counterparts. Samuel Pepys even mentioned it in his diaries. Located in what is now Pessac-Léognan, the property now lies on the outskirts of the ever-encroaching city of Bordeaux.Having fallen into disrepair, the estate was purchased in 1935 by Clarence Dillon, an American financier, and has enjoyed a steady and continuous revival ever since to occupy a prime position. Dillon's great-grandson, Prince Robert of Luxembourg, currently manages the estate, but a key influence on the reputation Haut-Brion enjoys today has been the Delmas family. George Delmas was manager and winemaker until 1960 when his son Jean-Bernard took over. Jean-Bernard was a visionary, responsible for a number of important innovations, and following his retirement in 2003, his son Jean-Philippe took over as general manager.
Whilst it is the Médoc that usually steals the spotlight in this vintage, the Chateau Haut-Brion 1996, the fruit of rigorous selection, is a brilliant wine and today is relatively underrated. Bursting from the glass with aromas of tobacco leaf, sweet cassis, loamy soil, cedar, and camphor, it is medium to full-bodied, multi-layered and intense, with a deep core of fruit, sweet tannins, and a long, juicy finish.
