Château Léoville-Las Cases 2nd Grand Cru Classé 2010, 0.75
Château Léoville Las Cases boasts one of the oldest histories in the Médoc. Leoville Las Cases was owned by some of France's most prominent and wealthy residents. The last royal family to own the estate was the one from which the château takes its name - the Lascases family. But the history of what we know as Château Leoville Las Cases doesn't start there. We have to go back to 1638 when Jean de Moytié, a member of the Bordeaux parliament, owned the vineyard. It remained in the hands of the Lascases family until they fell into financial difficulties. This forced the family to sell their shares to a number of prominent Bordeaux residents, among whom was the shrewd German businessman Théophile Skawinski. Skawinski showed particular interest in the property and became its chief manager. He transferred his shares to his heirs, the Delon family, who gradually began buying out the other shareholders and acquiring majority control.
Today, the Delon family also owns two other properties, Potensac and Nenin, and Léoville Las-Cases is managed by Jean-Hubert Delon, who succeeded his father in 2000 and became the fifth-generation family member to manage the estate. The vast 98-hectare vineyard of Léoville Las Cases is planted with 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. There are also a few remaining Petit Verdot vines. Interestingly, there has been an increase in Merlot plantings over the past few years. In the 1950s, the Leoville Las Cases vineyard underwent extensive replanting after the legendary frosts.
