Château Lynch-Bages 5th Grand Cru Classé 2005, 0.75
The name of Château Lynch Bages, which has a long history in Bordeaux, originates from the locality where the château is situated in Bages. The vineyard was established and then expanded by the Dejean family, who sold it in 1728 to Pierre Drouillard. Château Lynch Bages (5ème Cru Classé) is one of the most famous in Médoc. Since 1973, it has been owned by the enigmatic Jean-Michel Cazes, and is now managed by his son, Jean-Charles. Lynch Bages can be surprisingly soft and approachable when young. However, when it fully matures, it acquires a succulent richness and an ethereal bouquet of mint, blackcurrant, and cigar boxes. As Oz Clarke says: "Lynch Bages is impressive at five years old, beautiful at ten, and irresistible at twenty." The Lynch Bages vineyards are located on a plateau west of the town of Pauillac, in the small village of Bages. The 90 hectares of vineyards (planted with 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc) are situated on deep gravel layers over limestone. The fermentation of the red wines is temperature-controlled to ensure concentration and depth of color. A special system of pipes transfers the wine to oak barrels (60% new), where it ages for 15 months.
