Chateau Lynch-Bages 5th Grand Cru Classé 2009, 0.75
Château Lynch-Bages has a long history in Bordeaux. It is named after the area where the castle in Bages is located. The château's vineyard was established and then expanded by the Dejean family, who sold it in 1728 to Pierre Durand. Château Lynch-Bages holds the status of a fifth Grand Cru Classé, according to the 1855 classification from Medoc, and is one of the most famous estates in the region. Since 1973, it has been owned by Jean-Michel Cazes and managed by his son, Jean-Charles. The Lynch-Bages vineyards are situated on a plateau, west of the town of Pauillac, in the small village of Bages. Château Lynch-Bages owns 90 hectares of vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 75%, Merlot 15%, Cabernet Franc 10%) planted on deep gravelly soils with limestone.
Fermentation is temperature-controlled to ensure concentration and depth of color. A special system of pipes transfers the wine from the vats to oak barrels (60% new), where it ages for 15 months. Château Lynch-Bages can be surprisingly soft and elegant when young. However, when fully aged, it develops a succulent richness and an incredible bouquet of mint, blackcurrant, and cigar box. As Oz Clarke (renowned British wine critic) says, "Lynch-Bages is impressive at five years, beautiful at ten years, and irresistible at twenty years."
A blend of 76 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 18 %Merlot, 4 %Cabernet Franc and 2 %Petit Verdot.
The 2009 Château Lynch-Bages displays an intense color. The aroma exudes distinctive characteristics of a sunny vintage and excellent grape maturity: blackcurrant and dark berries. The taste offers a smooth, rich attack. The tannins are remarkably dense yet delicate. The finish is incredibly long. This superb wine bears unmistakable aging potential.
