Château Margaux 1er Grand Cru Classé 2010, 0.75
Château Margaux has been classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé since the 1855 Médoc classification and has been owned by the Mentzelopoulos family since 1978. Since then, it has produced some of the best and most awarded wines in Médoc. As one of the greatest and most impressive châteaux in the appellation, Château Margaux in its current form was built in the early 19th century, although viticulture had been practiced on the estate several centuries before.
Château Margaux owns 82 hectares of vineyards, with Cabernet Sauvignon being the dominant variety (75%), followed by Merlot (20%), as well as a small percentage of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Approximately 30,000 cases of red wine are typically produced, with the first wine usually accounting for just over 40% of the total production. Margaux wines are known for their aromatic elegance, but this should not be interpreted as them being light, because the best expressions have enviable structure, complexity, and great longevity.
Fermentation takes place in oak vats, and the wine is aged in 100% new barrels for 22 months. Paul Pontallier firmly believes that it is the Cabernet Sauvignon variety that is responsible for most of the sophistication that characterizes Château Margaux wines, and an increasing percentage of this variety is seen in the wine's blend.
