Description
Château Palmer is a leading wine estate in Margaux. Within its appellation, Palmer is certainly the closest rival to its first growth neighbor. Although officially classified as a third growth, in its good vintages Château Palmer is among the best in Bordeaux.
The estate dates back to the 17th century, but it wasn't until 1814 that the Englishman Charles Palmer became its owner and gave it his name. In 1938, the estate was acquired by four Bordeaux merchant families, two of whom – Sichel and Mähler-Besse – still own the estate today. Since 2004, the estate has been managed by the charismatic agronomist and oenologist Thomas Duroux, who previously made wine at Ornellaia in Tuscany. Palmer is located in the commune of Cantenac, right next to the village of Margaux. The 66 hectares of vineyards are planted on a plateau of gravelly, sandy, and clay soils overlooking the Gironde estuary. The plantings include equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon at 47% each, and 6% Petit Verdot. Although the average age of the vines is quite typical for the region – around 40 years – some of the vines are over 70 years old. This, along with the relatively high Merlot content and the benefits of careful and well-established biodynamic practices, may explain the richness and complexity of the wines.
