Description
Chateau de Saint Cosme is a leading estate in Gigondas and produces the appellation's benchmark wines. The property has been in the hands of the Barruol family since 1490. In 1992, Louis Barruol took over from his father, dramatically improving quality, and in 2010 he converted to biodynamics.
The estate is located in the heart of Gigondas, where 15 hectares of vineyards grow in the shadow of the Dentelles de Montmirail mountains. In addition to the estate-grown wines, labeled as "Chateau de Saint Cosme", Louis Barruol purchases grapes from contracted growers, labeling these wines as "Saint Cosme".
Chateauneuf-du-Pape Saint Cosme comes from three climats, the most famous of which is the La Crau plateau with its characteristic galets roulés on clay, which give power and structure to the blend. The Valloris and Cristia climats have sandy soils, which give the wine perfume and freshness. The wine is a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Cinsault, made with whole-cluster fermentation from native yeasts, aged for 24 months in old 228-liter barrels, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
