The history of the Courvoisier brand dates back to the early 19th century. In 1811, Napoleon Bonaparte himself visited Galloix's cellar, and inspired by what he tasted, began to give cognac rations to his troops to boost their morale during the ongoing wars. This was the emperor's first encounter with Courvoisier cognac and a harbinger of the beginning of a relationship between the future Courvoisier brand and the imperial courts of Napoleon I, II, and III.
