Description
In the 18th century, Spanish sailors traveled on their ships with many barrels full of sweet wine. However, when they reached the shores of Mexico, the barrels were empty, and on their way back, they decided to fill them with Mexican rum (Chinguirito). During the long journey back to Spain, the rum became infused with incredible aromas and sweetness from the leftover wine absorbed into the barrel walls. Its fame spread instantly, and the new rum became a threat to local alcohol producers. King Philip V Bourbon was so enraged that he banned the sale of this rum for almost a century. This is where its name, El ron Prohibido (the forbidden rum), comes from.
Ron Prohibido is still produced today using the same technology as in the 19th century, namely the use of sweet wine barrels and the Solera aging system. What is specific about it is the blending of rums from an older batch (more aged) with newer ones (younger). In this way, the old "educate" the young and improve their taste and character. The system consists of several rows of barrels (usually 3 or 4), built like a pyramid one above the other. Bottling takes place from the barrels on the lowest row, and immediately after, the system is refilled with new rum in the uppermost barrels. The result is a blend of rums of various ages, with the oldest being from the year the Solera system was filled.
Ron Prohibido Reserva 22 is a blend of rums for which 22 of the most aromatic American white oak barrels were chosen, which are additionally filled not only with rum but also with almond shells, pecans, and peach pits. Sugarcane juice (guarapo) is also added for additional freshness of the drink. The result is a unique rum with fresh notes but also rich in aromas. Bottling is not only from the lowest row of the Solera system but from all levels to achieve complexity of aromas.
