Fruhburgunder 2018, Kreuzberg 0.75
This very rare grape variety is only cultivated on 140 hectares (as of 2005) of vineyards in Germany. It was almost extinct in the 1960s and is currently grown on approximately 30 hectares in the Ahr Valley. It is considered a specialty of the wine region.
This mutation of Pinot Noir owes its name to its ripening 2-4 weeks earlier than its larger relative. The grapes for this wine are selected multiple times from approximately one hectare. The wine is aged for 10 months in new and up to 3-year-old barriques.
A full-bodied, creamy, and mouth-filling wine that presents very smoothly with delicate fruit and subtle vanilla notes. Complex, with an excellent tannin structure.
On July 14 and 15, 2021, Germany experienced a disaster in the form of the second deadliest flood in its history.
The Hamburg storm in 1962 claimed the most victims – 315. In 2021, 134 people died as a result of the catastrophic event, and billions of euros in damages were incurred across Germany.
The flood was preceded by an extreme amount of rainfall. Both the Ahr and Mosel rivers overflowed their banks and destroyed 3,000 out of 4,200 buildings in the Ahr Valley. Ultimately, 75% of the valley's residents were affected. The rains along the entire Mosel river, caused by the excess water, were a natural disaster that led not only to severe destruction for people and their homes, but also for the wines and vineyards in the Ahr Valley.
VIDA Wines & Spirits decided to help the Kreuzberg winery by purchasing wines affected by the flood and assisting in the recovery of the winery and the business of this iconic winery known for its Pinot Noirs (Spätburgunder). The labels of the wines, as seen in the photos, were more or less damaged, but the wine inside was preserved and there is no organoleptic change in its quality.
