Gaja Darmagi PDO 2016, 0.75
The crown jewel of Italian winemaking, Gaja winery, was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja in the Barbaresco region (Piedmont, Italy). Today, Gaja is owned and managed by the fifth generation of the family, having built a tradition of unwavering dedication to achieving uncompromising quality over the years. Thanks to Barbaresco, the winery's flagship, Gaja wines rose to prominence in Italy in the early 20th century. In 1961, Angelo (Giovanni's great-grandson) joined the winery, skillfully combining the preservation of Langhe's traditions with bold innovative solutions – both in the vineyards and in the cellars themselves. Angelo was also the first to introduce the excellent Gaja wines to international markets. Today, the winery owns 250 decares of vineyards in the Barbaresco (Barbaresco and Treiso) and Barolo (Serralunga d'Alba and La Morra) areas, as well as in Tuscany (Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino and Ca'Marcanda, located in the Bolgheri area).
Angelo Gaja forever changed the world's perception of Piedmontese wines when this historic wine was first released in 1985 (from the 1982 vintage). Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, planted around the iconic village of Barbaresco. According to a frequently told legend, Angelo's father exclaimed "Darmagi!" upon learning that his son had planted Cabernet Sauvignon in vineyards dedicated to the traditional Nebbiolo grape in Piedmont. The Piedmontese expression "Darmagi" means "what a pity!" or "what a shame!"
The color is intense dark red, almost black. The aroma is fruity with nuances of blackcurrant. The taste reveals a remarkable structure with exceptionally fine tannins, pronounced elegance, and a bouquet of concentrated fruit flavors. Extremely long finish and incredible aging potential.
