Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Weingebirge, Nikolaihof 0.75
Description
Nikolaihof in Mautern, Wachau, boasts a history spanning approximately two thousand years. It was once a Celtic cult site, part of a Roman fortress, a bishopric, and an administrative seat. The winery is the oldest in Austria. The Saahs family has owned Nikolaihof for 125 years and was an absolute pioneer in biodynamic viticulture in 1971. Riesling and Grüner Veltliner are primarily grown on 22 hectares according to the strict biodynamic guidelines of Demeter. The wines ferment on their own yeasts and are aged in large, old oak barrels in the historic Roman wine cellar for up to 20 years.
The grapes for this Grüner Veltliner come from the "Im Weingebirge" vineyard, on the Mautern side. The soil consists of clay, loess, and paragneiss. It fermented spontaneously with its own yeasts and aged for three and a half years in large, old wooden barrels.
Golden yellow with delicate silver reflections. An aroma of ripe mirabelle plums, apricots, and oranges, underpinned by invigorating honey spice. Powerful taste and characteristic spiciness.
Aging potential of more than 25 years.
