Description

Our history dates back to 1840 when Don Felipe de la Mata, the 8th Marquis de Vargas, decided to plant the first vineyards on the Hacienda Pradolagar estate. Marqués de Vargas began with a philosophy inspired by French châteaux, exclusively producing premium Reserva and Gran Reserva wines using grapes from their own vineyards right next to the winery.

The harvest is done by hand, plot by plot, with the initial selection made on-site in the vineyard. We pick the grapes into 12 kg boxes, which go into cold storage within minutes of picking, where they remain until the next day. This overnight chilling of the bunches has been shown to have a beneficial effect on the final quality of the wine. The wines age under perfect conditions in selected French oak barrels from the best coopers. These are used to produce the premium Marqués de Vargas wines, which have received the prestigious "Viñedo Singular" designation from the Rioja Regulatory Council (DOCa) and the Ministry of Agriculture thanks to the exceptional characteristics of the vineyards. Applying only sustainable farming methods, we produce our Gran Reserva using grapes with the best aging potential, selected from 52 hectares of our own vineyards, divided into 34 micro-plots according to soil type, grape variety, and winemaking potential.

Blend: Tempranillo 80%, Garnacha 10%, and Mazuelo 10%. Aged 24 months in oak barrels (16 months in French and 8 months in American). Followed by 3 years in the bottle. Vineyard age over 40 years.

Concentrated aromas of black fruits intertwine perfectly with notes of spices, a result of prolonged aging; with subtle balsamic notes that add freshness and balance. Density, with high-quality tannins and a long finish. Elegant, opulent, and with great aging potential.
