The Botanical ID of Monkey 47
Montgomery Collins' revolutionary idea was to create a new type of gin by combining exotic spices with natural plants from the Black Forest. Over a third of the ingredients in Monkey 47 are from the region where it is produced – spruce, elderflower, sloe, blackberry leaves, and many others not found in most gins.
However, the key to this eccentric blend is something specific to the Black Forest, which seems both surprising and made to enhance the right gin: the cranberry. It contains all those basic aromas expected from a good gin – fresh acidity, long bitter notes, and a slight sweetness. At the same time, more traditional herbs – especially juniper – also play an important role. Locals have a centuries-old tradition of marinating the famous Black Forest ham in a paste made from juniper berries. And if Montgomery Collins didn't have to search far for the ingredients for his unique gin back then, today, the producers of Monkey 47 go a step further towards perfection and import juniper from Tuscany and Croatia, where the sun grows it exactly as it needs to be to fit the entire Monkey 47 recipe.
