Nikolaihof Vinothek Riesling 2008, 0.75
Nikolaihof in Mautern, Wachau, has a history dating back around two thousand years. It was once a Celtic cult site, part of a Roman fortress, and a bishopric and administrative seat. The estate is the oldest winery in Austria. The Saahs family has owned Nikolaihof for 125 years and was an absolute pioneer in biodynamic agriculture in 1971. Riesling and Grüner Veltliner are predominantly grown on 22 hectares according to the strict biodynamic guidelines of Demeter. The wines ferment on their own yeasts and are stored in large, old oak barrels in the historic Roman wine cellar for up to 20 years.
The 1995 "Nikolaihof Vinothek" was the first dry white wine to be rated 100 points by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
The grapes used for this wine come from the "Im Weingebirge" vineyard (this vineyard is not mentioned on the bottled winery), where Saint Severin retreated to pray more than 1500 years ago. The soil is composed of amphibolite, loess, and paragneiss. The grapes come from the estate's older vines. The Riesling aged for more than 15 years on fine lees in wooden barrels and was bottled in April 2024.
Fine acidity, a phenolic note that gives the wine great seriousness, as well as a range of earthy, stony, and spicy notes. Structure and texture are what characterize this wine; transparency and clarity prevail here, where too often the focus is on opulent fruit. Despite its 16 years, one has the feeling that the wine is only at the beginning, not in the prime of its life.
