Description
Andrea Franchetti, founder of the iconic Tenuta di Trinoro in Tuscany, arrived on Mount Etna in 2000 and helped spark the mountain's winemaking renaissance and the region's international discovery as a quality wine region. Franchetti makes eight different wines at his Passopisciaro winery, totaling fewer than 40,000 bottles annually. Etna is Europe's highest active volcano, due to its relatively frequent lava eruptions. These eruptions devastate the landscape but each time leave a unique mineral profile, giving rise to the idea of different terroirs, here called Contrade. The boundaries of the Contrade reflect old lines of feudal ownership that are still outlined in the local land registry. Passopisciaro winery respects and utilizes the strengths of Etna's terroir, producing wines with remarkable complexity and individual character.
