Description
This venerable fifth-generation estate owns vineyards in the best areas of Volnay and Pommard. Joseph Voillot's son-in-law, Jean-Pierre Charlot, is currently the managing director; he worked closely with Joseph from 1980 until his retirement in 1995. For many years, Jean-Pierre was a professor at the Viticole Lycée in Beaune, where he taught several of Burgundy's rising stars. He is a meticulous man, and what interests him is dealing with the difficult years, when vineyard work, triage at harvest, and careful cellar practices really pay off.
Pommard Vieilles Vignes displays the same beautiful depth of black fruit in its aromatic constellation of dark berries, cassis, wood smoke, venison, bitter chocolate, dark soil tones, and a hint of oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, focused, and solid at its core, with ripe, firm tannins, good focus and grip, and a long, very youthful and promising finish. This wine will need at least a decade to soften in taste, but it has wonderful potential.
