Sassicaia 2019, Tenuta San Guido 0.75
In the 1920s, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta dreamed of creating a "thoroughbred" wine for himself, and for all aristocrats of that era, the ideal was Bordeaux. In the 1940s, after settling with his wife Clarice at Tenuta San Guido on the Tyrrhenian Sea, he experimented with several French grape varieties. A wine produced mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon was a major change in the Tuscan and Piedmontese tradition of Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, respectively. The innovative decision to plant this variety at Tenuta San Guido was partly due to the similarity that Mario had observed between the terrain of Tuscany and that of Graves in Bordeaux. The Marchesa's initial criticisms were not positive. Critics, accustomed to light local wines, were not charmed; it was not taken into account that the wines were made from the more complex Cabernet Sauvignon grape and would need more time to age and develop.
And so, from 1948 to 1967,
Sassicaia remained a purely private winery, whose wines were to be consumed only at Tenuta San Guido. Friends and relatives urged Mario Incisa to experiment further with his project and perfect his revolutionary winemaking style. It was not until 1968 that Sassicaia was first commercially released – its reception was worthy of a Bordeaux Premier Cru. Thus, the history of "Super Tuscan" began.
