The 15-year-old's distinctive character is the result of selective maturation; part of the spirit is matured in selected French oak casks for a specific period of time, so as not to overdo the power of the final result. The Glenlivet was one of the first distilleries to use French oak in the whisky production process, a technique that has since been imitated by many other producers. Limousin Oak, sourced from the Dordogne region in France, is often used for aging fine wines and cognacs. In the case of The Glenlivet, the low density of the material allows the spirit to penetrate deep into the wood, giving the drink a distinctive pronounced spiciness. French oak also increases the intensity of the whisky, resulting in a richer and creamier finish.
