Description
The Tenuta Tignanello estate is located in the heart of Chianti Classico. Two of the estate’s prized vineyards, Tignanello and Solaia, are on the same hill, on soils originating from marine marl from the Pliocene period, rich in limestone and shale. The two flagship wines of the estate, Solaia and Tignanello, are produced from these vineyards and have been described by the international press as “among the most influential wines in the history of Italian viticulture.” The Tignanello estate has vineyards of local Sangiovese grapes, as well as some other non-traditional varieties such as Cabernet Franc.
Tignanello is produced exclusively from the vineyard of the same name, a plot of about 140 acres at 1150-1325 feet above sea level on the Tignanello estate. This is perhaps the first Sangiovese to begin aging in small oak barrels, the first modern red wine to use international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon in its blend, and among the first red wines from Chianti Classico to be produced without white varieties.
The wine, originally called "Chianti Classico Riserva vigneto Tignanello", was first produced from a single vineyard plot in 1970, with the blend containing 20% Canaiolo and 5% Trebbiano and Malvasia and aged in small oak barrels. In 1971, the white varieties were eliminated and Tignanello became a red Tuscan table wine, instead of a Chianti Classico. Since 1982, the blend has been the current one.
Tignanello is produced only in favorable vintages and was not produced in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1984, 1992 and 2002.
