Whiskey Wrap Ad

Advertising has always been a fundamental part of commerce and the sale of goods. The drive to create distinctive and effective advertising is also valid in the alcohol industry, and in this article, we will showcase our most interesting and beloved advertisements in the whisky industry.

Whisky advertising began in the mid-18th century, primarily featuring texts, black-and-white drawings, and low-quality photos due to the limited capabilities of the printing industry.

In the early 19th century, the first color pages timidly appeared, showing bottles and people depicting emotion and mood.

The first commercial was for the Dewar’s brand, dating back to 1897 and lasting 50 seconds. For its time, it caused a real sensation, and when I visited the Dewar’s Aberfeldy distillery 3 years ago, the advertisement greeted me right at the entrance, still inspiring with its boldness and innovation for such an early period. You can find a link to it here.

The list of celebrities who have participated in various advertisements and even owned their own brands over the years is extensive, and a small selection of our favorites includes: Sean Connery for Suntory, Dewar’s and Jim Beam, Michael Owen for Spey, David Beckham for Haig, George Clooney and Matthew McConaughey for Wild Turkey, Conor McGregor for his brand Proper 12, Mila Kunis for Jim Beam, and Prince Charles is an ambassador for Laphroaig, a brand he loves so much that its coat of arms even appears on the bottle's label.

The presence of whisky in film scenes over the past 50 years has been more than exciting and surprising. This so-called product placement has been used in numerous popular movie hits, and the glass of amber liquid has appeared in the spotlight and in the hands of various film stars.

Let's remember:

James Bond in "Skyfall" with The Macallan:

Bill Murray in "Lost in Translation" with Hibiki:

"The Day After Tomorrow" and Balvenie 12 YO:

"Kingsman: The Golden Circle" and Old Forester:

Unfortunately, in recent years, severe advertising restrictions have been imposed in several markets, prohibiting the display of bottles, liquids, or consumption, which significantly limits product exposure but encourages advertising agencies to be increasingly innovative and unconventional.
