Black Island

Black Island

Black Island Winery is located in the Croatian village of Smokvica, on the island of Korčula. It produces a white wine called Merga Victa, from the indigenous Pošip grape variety. The area where the winery's vineyards are located was called by the locals – Merga Victa, which literally means "Path of Water" in Old Dalmatian.

After extensive research and discussions with enologists, it was concluded that the numerous freshwater springs in this area are most likely the reason for the emergence of the Pošip grape variety, which is a true natural phenomenon. The Merga Victa vineyards are in the same location as these water sources. In combination with the reddish-brown soil and 2880 hours of sunshine per year, this makes the location perfect for growing grapes.

Nature has blessed Korčula with a freshwater spring that nourishes the vineyards around Smokvica village. Talented enologists Igor Radovanović and Nikola Mirošević have taken nature's gifts and created this incredible wine.

Region

Dalmatia is one of the four wine regions in Croatia. It covers the entire territory from Zadar to Konavle at the southern end of the country. It is in this region that the oldest records of grape cultivation in Croatia have been found. The Dalmatian region traditionally produces more red wines than white. Some of the most beautiful vineyards in the country are also located here – some are situated on hard-to-reach, steep slopes, but it is precisely there that the highest quality vines grow.

Climate and terroir

The Mediterranean climate, characterized by sunny, warm, and dry summers, makes the region a wonderful place for growing grapes. Dalmatia produces full-bodied and mature wines, many of which are made from indigenous varieties from very old vineyards. The region stands out for its diverse vineyards and unique landforms – from vineyards in the narrow coastal belt to those on high and steep slopes or terraces carved into karst rocks.

Wine

Pošip is the most distinctive white grape variety from Dalmatia. It was discovered 150 years ago by a local farmer in the village of Smokvica, where the winery is also located. Merga Victa carefully selects the grapes for its wines from 25 local farming families who have been growing grapes for generations. In Smokvica, there are a total of 200 vineyards, located at an altitude between 40 and 160 meters. The vines are at least 15 years old, and the selected grapes come from three different types of soil - red earth, sand, and rocky, to achieve the desired balance.
