Hardened

The Tement winery was established in 1959. Josef and Edina Tement started with just two hectares of vines. The Zieregg and Grassnitz vineyards are located on both sides of the house. Manfred Tement had to take over the small family winery too young, after his father died prematurely. The only advantage the young winemaker had was his father's good reputation. Since then, many things have changed, and the Tement winery is constantly evolving. However, one thing never changes: the love for wine and the ambition to achieve the best quality. Today, the winery is managed by Armin Tement and his brother Stefan. The two brothers were born and raised at the winery, and taking over the family business was their calling.

Armin completed his education in 2005 and undertook several internships abroad and in Austria. Today, he is responsible for the family winery. He works hand in hand with his father Manfred and gained full trust for all production in 2008. The two make a good team and develop their vineyards in accordance with the principles of organic culture.

The first 10 hectares were converted to 100% organic plantings, with more and more vineyards.

With the 2008 vintage, Tement was officially certified organic. In 2019, the vineyards in Slovenia followed.

In 2009, the international jury of "The 50 best vineyards of the world" selected the Tement winery as one of the 15 wineries in the world worth visiting.

Grapes

For decades, Tement Winery has been synonymous with the highest quality and elegance in winemaking. One of the principles that brothers Stefan and Armin Tement follow is working in complete harmony with nature. This is primarily expressed in the production of wines exclusively from local grape varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling, Gelber Muskateller, Weissburgunder, and Morillon. All these varieties have a history in Styria, thanks to the regional climate and specific conditions. In their words, they see their wine for what it is: a snapshot in time, far from any predictability.

Terroir

Today, Tement winery has vineyards on both sides of the border: on the Slovenian and Austrian sides. In this way, the family wants to show the differences and characteristic features of the two terroirs. It may seem difficult to achieve, but every drop of sweat and every minute of hard work are worth it. The winery's most valuable vineyards have two things in common: they are located on south-facing slopes and all are situated at high altitudes. These characteristics provide the vineyards with a special microclimate that helps create wines with a perfect acidic structure

Vinification

Recreating the beauty and charm of Styria is no easy task. Fortunately, a wine classification system was created in 2018. Wines are divided into Gebietsweine (regional wines), Ortsweine (village wines), and Riedenweine (single vineyard wines). Quality requirements are particularly high. Additionally, every stage of harvest processing must be done manually. To achieve the high goals they set for themselves, winemakers must harvest at the right time and handle the grapes very carefully in the cellar. Fermentation occurs naturally, and the harvest from each vineyard is vinified separately.
